The Prettiest Trek in India - Kashmir Great Lakes trek

The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is often touted as India’s prettiest trek, and its reputation is well-deserved. Imagine a host of pristine lakes surrounded by snow-capped mountains, their turquoise waters reflecting the sky and the peaks above. Just as one catches their breath from the beauty of one lake, another one comes into view, each more breathtaking than the last. And if that wasn't enough, endless carpets of lush green grass dotted with thousands of colorful flowers stretch out before trekkers.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive to the base camp. The views along the way are already stunning, setting high expectations for the trek ahead. After signing the disclaimer forms and receiving some general instructions, the day wraps up early to rest for the exciting journey ahead.

The Trek Begins

The trek to the Kashmir Great Lakes begins with warm-ups and a sense of eager anticipation. Notably, safety concerns often accompany trekking in Kashmir. However, numerous army camps throughout the route ensure tight security. IDs are checked, and information about trekkers and staff is recorded multiple times during the trek. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek is popular, with thousands of people completing it safely every year, so rest assured that the journey is well-managed.

Each day, packed lunches are enjoyed midway on the trail. After walking since 9:00 in the morning, by 3:00 PM, the next stop may still not be in sight. Despite the fatigue, the camaraderie and breathtaking views keep spirits high.

After a long day of trekking, routine oxygen level checks are performed, and the group heads towards the next camp. As the ascent continues, the weather may turn chilly and windy, with a light drizzle adding to the adventure. The sheer size and grandeur of the landscape make everyone feel insignificant, in the best possible way.

Stopping at a beautiful patch for lunch, the group lingers long after finishing the meal, unable to tear themselves away from the stunning views. The pristine Vishansar Lake, nestled at the foot of four mountains, is a sight to behold.

The Challenge Ahead

The next day is anticipated to be the toughest and longest of the trek. While the altitude isn't extremely high, the difficulty of the trek should not be underestimated. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek involves walking 16 kilometers in a day, with most of it being uphill. Unlike traditional treks that have initial days of ascent followed by a gradual descent, this trek involves alternating ascents and descents each day. Every day, a new pass is climbed and then descended into another valley. After two hours of ascent, the highest point of the trek is reached, where the twin lakes are visible together, creating a spectacular view.

Descending into a lovely green meadow, trekkers walk through a bed of tiny, colorful flowers. One of the most pristine lakes on this trek, Gadsar Lake, greets everyone with its serene beauty. Unlike most treks that have one major attraction or summit day, the Kashmir Great Lakes trek offers something special every day. Just when one thinks they've seen the best, another stunning landscape awaits.

Feeling blessed to be in such a beautiful place, there is interaction with the operations team and staff, gaining a deeper understanding of the efforts involved in running the trek. Volunteering to help with tasks from time to time enhances appreciation for the trek.

Exploring Satsar Lakes, Gangbal and Nankol Lakes

After reaching the campsite and having lunch, the group explores the Satsar lakes, marveling at their beauty. On day six, a challenging stretch of boulders is crossed. From the top of the ridge, the lakes Nandkol and Gangbal lie next to each other.

Despite the rain, which makes the trail slippery, the trek continues to offer awe-inspiring views. After the weather clears, Gangbal Lake is visited, a tip-worthy experience.

A Surreal Experience

Though the trek is becoming more crowded and commercialized, it remains a must-see for its surreal landscapes. The vibrant colors and unbelievable beauty seem almost photoshopped, yet they are real. Now it is clear why this is called India’s prettiest trek.

Sometimes, being alone in the rain, surrounded by mountains covered in clouds, can be a profoundly beautiful experience. The sounds of rain, water, and birds create a calming atmosphere that enhances the trek's magic.

Concluding the Trek

On the last day, despite heavy rain, the trek begins at 7 in the morning. The trail is slippery, but the cooler temperatures make it manageable. Early July may bring several rainy days and cloudy skies, but August might be a better time to undertake this trek for clear skies, lush green landscapes, and blooming flowers.

As the base approaches, the first signs of network connectivity appear, marking the end of an incredible journey. The Kashmir Great Lakes trek, best undertaken in summer, offers a blend of surreal landscapes, vibrant colors, and unforgettable experiences.
